Remember Steel Empire? The shooter initially released through Flying Edge for the Sega Genesis and contributed to the “shmup” movement that led the console to greatness. Well, in 2024, it appears that it’ll be doing it again. Twofold.

ININ Games has announced that it will release two games in the Steel Empire saga for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 early next year. The Japanese publisher Mebius is teaming up with the company to produce The Legend of Steel Empire (in boxed and digital editions), as well as the digital exclusive Over Horizon X Steel Empire.

Here’s the official description for The Legend of Steel Empire, per the publisher:

The Legend of Steel Empire marks the latest entry in this series. The HD remaster is based on the PC game from a few years back but features some important additions: All graphics have been improved in high definition, the controls have been reworked, and there is a leveling system: the more items you collect, the stronger you get, but also the opponents will get more resilient, and the hordes will get bigger.. Ahem, anyway, enter one of the Striker airplanes or the Zeppelin with an aerial mine launcher and fight your way through seven complex stages full of well-balanced euro-shmup action. In short: A Remaster – Restored with Love!

In addition, the Japanese-only spiritual successor Over Horizon x Steel Empire will also make its debut, with U.S. gamers finally being able to experience it for the first time.

For you collectors out there, Strictly Limited Games is also offering Steel Empire Chronicles for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, as well as Over Horizon for the NES! You can check them out here, and they will release in 2024 as well.

And for those that can’t wait, Steel Empire is currently available for Steam!
