Happy Mar10 day, everyone! Like you, we are enjoying our favorite Mario games from the land of Nintendo. And that includes the Super Mario Galaxy games, the noteworthy adventures from the Wii era. Now, we did see Super Mario Galaxy make its way to Switch, as part of the limited Super Mario 3D All-Stars release. However, since then, there’s barely been a dent in this widespread universe. That, folks, needs to change.
Why, you ask? Because it’s time. It’s been 15 years since we’ve gotten a new entry in the Super Mario Galaxyfranchise, which is staggering considering its top-notch quality. So here’s why we think it’s time for the series to return, particularly on the new Nintendo Switch 2 platform. Let’s fly!
The Vast Universe of Super Mario Galaxy
The first thing you should realize with Super Mario Galaxy is that it has boundless opportunities for expansion. That means exploring new galaxies and planets where danger runs rampant, and secrets await. The first two games in the series are wild about this, especially the cool hidden challenge stages in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
So, yes, a third chapter that takes advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware (and possibly works on the original Switch to some extent) would be a hit. Imagine larger levels than ever before, with space literally as far as the eye can see. For good measure, imagine being able to do so with extra characters, like Luigi and maybe even, dare we say it, Donkey Kong.
It’s just an idea, but fans of the series know just how big this universe has become. And how much bigger it could very well be.
Super Mario Galaxy Is Long Overdue
Another aspect to consider with Super Mario Galaxy 3 is that it’s just time for it to return. That’s because Nintendo has literally covered every other known base in the Mario universe. Super Mario 3D World? Yup, got a Switch expansion. Super Mario Bros. Wonder? Covered the 2D spectrum with incredible style. Super Mario Odyssey? Introduced some grand new ideas, but we can wait a little bit for a sequel. (Well, some of us.)
But Super Mario Galaxy? It’s overdue for a revisit. As you saw, it was a major hit when Super Mario 3D All-Stars made the rounds. It still is, with those cartridges fetching around $70+ on eBay, maybe even higher complete. With that, a new game would definitely hit the spot.
Galaxy Could Utilize the Nintendo Switch 2’s Tricks
One great thing about Nintendo’s new consoles is its ability to make games that utilize their abilities. The Wii, for example, embraced motion controls with Wii Sports. And the Switch, obviously, went leaps and bounds with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and its online play.
So, why can’t the Nintendo Switch 2 find use with Super Mario Galaxy 3? It sure could. The usage of the new JoyCon controllers could come in handy for shooting stars or, dare we say it, introducing actual co-op. For good measure, the reported “mouse” ability might lend a hand with exploring certain stages. And, of course, if there’s online functionality, there’s huge room for a leaderboard system with the new challenge levels.
I’m just saying that, with new hardware, you want to show off why it’s absolutely must-own. Super Mario Galaxy 3 could be the key to all that, and Nintendo definitely knows that.
It Would Provide an Excuse To Release Super Mario Galaxy 2
Last but certainly not least, the introduction of Super Mario Galaxy 3 could warrant a re-release of Super Mario Galaxy 2. That sequel is currently only on Wii/Wii U hardware, but a reintroduction on the original Switch (and Switch 2) would be huge. Like Metroid Prime Remastered before it, it could get players ready for the incoming adventure at hand. And, of course, it wouldn’t hurt Nintendo’s sales one bit.
We could also see a Mario Galaxy collection that introduces 1 & 2 together. That would give the Switch a nice little send-off, while providing the Switch 2 with another favorite. Either way, another win for Nintendo. Make it happen.
The Galaxy Is Yours
So, now we wait. The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal is set for early April 2025. At that time, we’ll see the new Mario Kart in action, along with whatever else Nintendo has up its sleeves. Hopefully, we’ll see Super Mario Galaxy 3as part of that package. It’s been long overdue, and there’s much to explore within this rich realm. Let’s see what you’ve got, Nintendo!
