I personally miss the days of game rentals. I remember the excitement of ordering a particular game to rent and then waiting for it to arrive in the post. Lucky for me and others however the days of game rentals appear to be coming back in force thanks to the new Xbox Game Pass service. Like many the first thing that comes to mind when the words “Digital game rental service” are uttered, the first things that come to mind are past attempts such as Onlive or the recent PlayStation service which had a some what rocky launch. Hopefully however Microsoft have something unique to offer on Xbox Live.
The service which when it launches on the 1st of June will bolster a somewhat impressive library of 100+ Xbox one and backwards compatible games available to download including games such as Halo 5, Payday 2 and the Bioshock trilogy. Thankfully for those with a less the ideal internet connection the game pass service will allow players to download each title rather than have to stream them from the cloud like previous rental services have done.
The service is subscription based (£9.99 a month) but Xbox live gold members are able to grab themselves a 14 day unrestricted free trial right off the bat before having to commit to anything. Personally I hope this service is a success and helps to resurrect the old game rental market for other platforms as well.
