Hello there ladies, gentlemen and those of a non-binary nature, my name is Daibhi and this is the Gamerhub Community. As Halloween/Samhain is very nearly upon us, and I’ve got a bunch of games coming up on here, I thought I’d do a bit of a classic. We’ve all seen Hello Neighbor on YouTube or other streaming services. Whether it’s making Markiplier jump out of his trousers or whether you’re trying to find a decent walkthrough, this game has become something of a cult classic. I’m not a fan of this sort of genre of horror game myself, but armed with more than a few cans of Dr Pepper and an unshakeable sense of sarcasm, I dived right into it. So after the trailer below, let’s begin.
Hello Neighbor, developed by Dynamic Pixels and published by TinyBuild, is a unique addition to the stealth horror genre that has intrigued players since its release. The game blends elements of suspense, puzzling, and a dash of horror to deliver a truly unconventional experience. As you step into the shoes of a curious protagonist, you’ll find yourself drawn into a world where unlocking the neighbor’s mysterious secrets becomes an obsession. In this review, I’ll delve deep into the various aspects of Hello Neighbor to see if it lives up to its intriguing premise.
Gameplay (8/10)
The core gameplay mechanic of Hello Neighbor revolves around infiltrating your neighbor’s house while avoiding detection. To be honest, it’s a refreshing departure from traditional stealth games, where the focus is often on escaping, rather than entering. The puzzles and challenges you encounter are inventive and require creative or lateral thinking. However, the controls can sometimes feel a bit clunky, leading to moments of frustration on the Xbox One X I used for this review. Yet, this only adds to the sense of urgency when you’re being pursued by the neighbor. It can get seriously unnerving, feeling your heartbeat as you try to avoid your mysterious neighbor for dear life.
Graphics and Visuals (7/10)
Visually, Hello Neighbor boasts a unique art style that’s both cartoonish and unsettling. It’s Fortnite-meets-Bendy and The Ink Machine levels of creepy, and chock full of both shadow and vibrant colour that made me very glad I had the screen guard in front of my TV. The house and its surroundings are meticulously designed, and the attention to detail is spectacularly done.
However, the game occasionally suffers from graphical glitches and performance issues, which can detract from the overall immersion. A more polished graphical performance would have elevated the experience and made this one I could replay again and again. Sadly, the graphics can often leave a lot to be desired, which is why this didn’t score as highly as I might have expected. I have heard that this game plays better on PC, so if you swing by our twitter, you’ll be able to find out soon if I think the PC version holds up as well.
Story and Narrative (6/10)
While Hello Neighbor’s mysterious and enigmatic narrative is undoubtedly one of its defining features, it also happens to be one of its most polarizing aspects, and for good reason. The game’s deliberate choice to keep the plot obscure and open to interpretation can be both a strength and a weakness, and it’s in this ambiguity that some players may find themselves grappling with frustration.
One of the primary issues with Hello Neighbor’s plot is its lack of context and clear exposition. From the outset, players are thrust into the shoes of an unnamed protagonist, tasked with uncovering the secrets hidden within the neighbor’s house. The game offers little to no background information or motivation for this mission, leaving players to wonder why they are engaged in this peculiar and, at times, unsettling pursuit. While some gamers may appreciate the absence of hand-holding and the opportunity to piece together the story’s fragments themselves, others may find it disorienting and unsatisfying.
The absence of a concrete narrative structure also results in disjointed storytelling. As players progress through the game’s levels, they may encounter bizarre and surreal scenarios that feel disconnected from one another. This can make it challenging to discern a coherent overarching storyline or understand the motivations of the characters involved. While the mystery is undoubtedly a central aspect of the game’s appeal, it can leave players craving more substantial context and a deeper connection to the events unfolding within the neighbor’s enigmatic abode.
Moreover, Hello Neighbor’s plot lacks the emotional depth that many players seek in a narrative-driven game. The absence of well-defined characters and their respective backstories robs the player of any meaningful emotional investment in the storyline. As a result, the game’s revelations and twists, while intriguing on a superficial level, lack the emotional impact and resonance that can make a narrative truly memorable.
In summary, while Hello Neighbor’s deliberate choice to keep its plot shrouded in mystery contributes to its unique and suspenseful atmosphere, it also comes with notable drawbacks. The lack of context, disjointed storytelling, and absence of emotional depth can leave players feeling disconnected from the narrative and may ultimately diminish the overall satisfaction derived from the game. For those who thrive on ambiguity and enjoy piecing together a puzzle of a storyline, Hello Neighbor’s plot may be an exciting challenge. However, for players who prefer a more structured and emotionally engaging narrative, the game’s storytelling approach may leave them yearning for a deeper and more fulfilling experience.
Atmosphere and Sound (9/10)
Hello Neighbor’s sound design is a standout feature that significantly contributes to the game’s eerie and immersive atmosphere. From the moment you step foot into the neighbor’s house, you’re enveloped in an unsettling silence that sets the stage for suspense. The absence of a traditional background score during most of the gameplay creates a sense of isolation and tension, making you acutely aware of every creaking floorboard and distant footstep.
The use of audio cues in Hello Neighbor is masterful in generating a constant feeling of unease. The sounds of the neighbor’s movements, whether he’s shuffling about in another room or chasing you down a hallway, are spine-chilling and add a palpable sense of danger to the experience. The way these auditory signals become more pronounced as he gets closer adds to the adrenaline-pumping thrill of trying to evade capture. Additionally, the sporadic bursts of haunting music and other sound effects punctuate key moments in the game, intensifying the overall sense of suspense and dread.
Level Design (8/10)
Hello Neighbor’s level design is a testament to the game’s commitment to delivering a challenging and engaging experience. Each level within the neighbor’s house is a meticulously crafted puzzle box, brimming with secrets and surprises. What sets these levels apart is their remarkable variety, both in terms of visual aesthetics and gameplay challenges. From the cozy and inviting living room to the eerie, otherworldly basement, each area exudes a unique atmosphere that keeps players eagerly exploring. The house’s layout and the interconnections between rooms are cleverly designed, often requiring players to think outside the box and consider unconventional solutions. As you progress, the complexity of the puzzles gradually increases, ensuring that you’re continually pushed to exercise your problem-solving skills and adapt to new challenges. The level design effectively encourages exploration, and the satisfaction of uncovering hidden passages, shortcuts, and hidden secrets is deeply rewarding. While some might occasionally find themselves lost in the maze-like layout, it’s precisely this sense of complexity and unpredictability that adds to the game’s appeal, making Hello Neighbor’s level design a standout feature that keeps players captivated from start to finish.
Replayability (7/10)
Hello Neighbor offers a fair amount of replayability for players willing to dive deeper into its enigmatic world. One of the primary sources of replay value lies in the game’s hidden secrets and alternative endings. As you progress through the levels, you’ll encounter hidden rooms, cryptic messages, and mysterious items that hint at a larger narrative. Uncovering these secrets and deciphering their meaning can be a compelling reason to return to the game, as it encourages players to explore every nook and cranny of the neighbor’s house. Additionally, Hello Neighbor features multiple endings, which provide an incentive to replay the game with different strategies and choices, adding variety to subsequent playthroughs.
While the core gameplay experience remains consistent, the unpredictability of the neighbor’s AI behavior ensures that each playthrough feels unique. The neighbor’s actions and responses to your intrusions can vary, keeping you on your toes and necessitating different approaches to achieve your objectives. Moreover, the game’s community-driven content, including user-generated mods and custom levels, expands its replayability. Players can access a wealth of fan-created content, offering fresh challenges and puzzles to solve, thus extending the game’s longevity. While Hello Neighbor might not be a title that you’ll revisit endlessly, the hidden mysteries, alternative endings, and user-generated content collectively contribute to a replayable experience that entices players to return for more, even after they’ve initially unraveled the neighbor’s secrets.
The Verdict
In conclusion, Hello Neighbor is a game that defies traditional gaming conventions. It offers a suspenseful and unique experience that will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the stealth horror genre. While it has its share of flaws, including occasional technical issues and a fragmented narrative, it succeeds in delivering a genuinely unsettling atmosphere and creative puzzles. If you’re looking for a game that will challenge your problem-solving skills and keep you on edge, Hello Neighbor is worth a try. Just be prepared for a few bumps along the way.
