With next-gen consoles taking hold in the gaming market, those who still own the last-gen consoles are left wondering as to when the games will stop being made for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Well, Ubisoft have kindly alleviated that fear and have announced that they intend to continue to develop games for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for several more years.
Prior to the confirmation of Assassins Creed: Unity on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, Lionel Raynaud said that:
“We will have games for the PS3 and 360 for this year and probably the years after. We want to be able to provide games to people who are playing these consoles”
Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag was the first game to be available on both last and next-gen consoles, but it was designed with that in mind. However, to state that the game was a cross-generation game is untrue, since certain features available could only be for this generation.
Raynaud continued to say that developing across both last and next-gen consoles isn’t very restrictive for developers. He stated that cross-generational development is simply a matter of choosing which console to be the focus throughout.
“It’s a choice. Even when you do a game that has old-gen and new-gen versions, we decide which one is lead. So, if you decide that new gen is lead for all of your games, then you have no restrictions at all” says Raynaud “We never made choices on Assassins Creed or Watch Dogs where because we have this other generation we couldn’t put something in the game. It would be a very bad call from a company and brand perspective”.
Ubisoft is not the only publisher who has announced that they will develop games for both generations of consoles. EA have announced their plans as well to continue on 360 and PS3. Though, with the current reputation they are receiving, I doubt that many will flock to purchase their games any time soon.
