Survival horror has always had a reputation for becoming punishing at the drop of a pin. Our heroes never seem to be on the up-and-up, but things always manage to go from bad to worst. That’s what makes the genre so enjoyable. The real allure comes from stacking the odds without making them insurmountable.

The folks over at Bethesda certainly want you to feel that perpetual sense of tension but don’t want you to feel overwhelmed by it in The Evil Within. If you want to see Sebastian Castellanos uncover the reasons behind the appearance of the deadly Ruvik in Krimson City, you’ll need to stay low, make use of your surroundings, make good use of every last bullet – and don’t forget to set a match where appropriate. Should this become too much, Sebastian will occasionally be able to seek asylum, quite literally.
