For those of you interested in how games are made, Project Spark for the Xbox One and Windows 10 should already be on your radar.
Essentially a customisable sandbox-style game, Project Spark gives you multiple different ways to create your own games and interactive media. It launched back in October last year, and many different games and mini-games have been made on it, including an interactive video for a Linkin Park single.
More advanced than most level editors, it allows you to code in a similar way to some full-blown game engines, and some of the things you can do can rather complex. It teaches game design fundamentals rather well, and it’s great for kids and adults looking to see if they can make their own games.
It’s been announced that, starting October this year, the entirety of the creative elements in Project Spark will be completely free. Anyone who purchased in-game content may also be eligible for a refund. Included in these content-expanding updates are different themes, such as Dungeon Descent and Zombie Outbreak, but it also included a series of episodic action-adventure modules featuring Conker, the frequently-lewd star of Rare’s classic Conker’s Bad Fur Day (playable on Xbox One via the Rare Replay collection.)
The 16th title update for the game will remove the marketplace, and allow returning and new players to download the content completely free of charge. This update has been scheduled to arrive on October 5th. If you’re interested in trying to make your own game alone or with friends, it might be worth looking into.
