Today Blizzard announced the newest map to its 2016 game Overwatch. The Lunar Horizon Colony is making its way to the game sometime in the near future.
The way Blizzard has announced this has come a very different way to how the company usually announces incoming maps & characters (I’m looking at you Sombra). With Sombra, Blizzard teased players for months with various tid bits of information. Which the company released via a complex meta game as well as various ingame lore.
However with Lunar Horizon, Blizzard have straight come out with map details and information as to how this map features into the Overwatch Lore. In the Overwatch backstory the Lunar Horizon Colony was the home to Overwatch member and everyones favorite ape, Winston. At somepoint the other Apes revolted against their human counterparts and staged a Planet of the Apes style revolt which left Winston escaping the colony and making his way to Earth. Whether the other Apes are still on the Colony remains to be seen as the teaser trailer which accompanied the reveal did not show this.
The map its self will feature in the games Assault mode where both teams vie for control of the maps control points to effectively take control for their team.
The official announcement from Blizzard reads:
“Horizon Lunar Colony is an Assault map set in a scientific base on the moon. Built as a first step towards humanity’s renewed exploration of space, the colony’s goal was to examine the effects of prolonged extraterrestrial habitation—on human and ape alike. The scientists’ research proved incredibly promising…until, suddenly, all contact and communications with the base were lost.
knowing Blizzard the map will feature clues as to what happened for the players to find whilst they fight the other team.
Currently there is no set release date for the map however it is currently on the public teat server that is available to PC players. Hopefully this means that Lunar Horizon will become available for Xbox One players in the next couple of months.
