Tuesday 17th November 2020, Night City Wire dropped a special episode to show off what the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 running on current and next gen consoles. The entire episode is only 10:39 long, and is a brilliant showcase of the game running on consoles instead of PC.
The episode of Night City Wire is once again hosted by Hollie Bennett. Our presenter starts off ensuring viewers that the game will be releasing on December 10th 2020. Soon after we are thrown straight into footage of the game on consoles.
The footage is shown on Xbox hardware, switching between Xbox One X and Series X. Their is a distinct difference in graphics when outside, yet inside I found it harder to tell. The darkness and compression of video on YouTube can make comparisons hard. I was viewing on a standard HD monitor and not a 4K display.
Switching to 4k mode on my phone revealed, well no real difference in resolution. The videos resolution maxed out 1080p for the gameplay footage, yet that is not a big issue.
The biggest difference was the on screen between the two consoles was the way the lighting reacted with the environment. The use of next gen software turned an already pretty nice looking game into something far more dynamic. The lighting of the car appeared to be more reflective on the higher spec console, allowing for a nice glow under the car. The purely dynamic choices are not even the extent of the next gen upgrade. This was confirmed near the end of the video to be dropping next year.
The demonstration didn’t give away too much story details about the game, rather to observe and judge. I was pleasantly surprised by the way Johnny Silverhand comes and goes. The character has remained a big mystery since the reveal at E3 last year. Any game though that features Keanu Reeves is going to be interesting to say the least.
