A recent report has claimed that Microsoft plan to remove the “paywall” for streaming apps such as Netflix. Microsoft sources say that this subscription requirement will be removed soon, but other services may be affected (eek).

Currently, Xbox One and Xbox 360 users cannot use apps such as Netflix, 4OD or even Skype without an Xbox Live subscription. As a Windows 8 user, this restriction has been frustrating when I can freely use Netflix on my laptop when my subscription runs out, but can’t use it on my Xbox One. Due to this limitation, these consoles have been lagging behind the likes of the PS4, PS3, Wii and the Wii U which offer these services for free. Smartphones and tablets also allow users to use these apps with no subscription.

It’s about time this paywall was removed! But what services will be affected when it is removed? Will the new TV channel Xbox Originals be put behind the paywall instead?
