Though it’s not officially announced, Halo 2 Anniversary Edition has been rumoured to come out in November of this year, marking 10 years since the original was released, and Phil Spencer has been talking about what a potential HD edition of the game would be like. While this doesn’t confirm the existence of the game, it does show that Microsoft and the team working on Halo have been giving it some serious thought.
It was said by Spencer that the game would have to be the multiplayer experience that everyone found in the original release of Halo 2, one of the games stronger points. “I think you just have to nail that in just such a fundamentally core way.” Spencer commented, saying “If there were something called Halo 2 Anniversary. I think the multiplayer would have to be fantastic.”
There was also talk about Halo 1 Anniversary, with Spencer saying that they felt the multiplayer that was included was good, but Halo 1 never had a multiplayer component in the truest sense, probably referring to the fact that it wasn’t online, and though popular, wasn’t as big as the sequels multiplayer. It was mentioned that it’d need to be done much better than the first HD remake, and would have to satisfy the player’s needs to feel the nostalgia of the old way that Halo multiplayer worked, rather than port the maps and feel of the game to the newest engine, now Halo 4, and at the time of Halo 1 Anniversary, Halo Reach.
It’s an interesting piece of information, but still leaves confirmation of Halo 2 Anniversary being real up in the air. There will be a Halo game this year, confirmed a while ago, but what that game will be is completely unknown at this point. It’s most likely being kept back for E3, where the other big announcements for Microsoft and the Xbox One will be.
