With the Bethesda Press Conferences first year, they started off big with Single Player and Multiplayer reveals for Doom. Let’s not beat around the bush and get into what we’ve seen.
First off, this is your Grandads Doom. From the first Gameplay snippit, we saw the Doom Marine kitted out in his iconic, although modern-ififed power armour running around a base on Mars. Hellspawn come and he just went to town on them. It’s much faster paced than Doom 3 and it’s expansion, brings back the fan favourite Super-Shotgun and Chainsaw, and has brutal looking execution moves that can be done to enemies that seem to have been stunned. Double Jumps are also in the game, meaning mobility will be higher than ever, and it certainly looks like it’s trying to harken back to the days of old where it was all about speed.
To counter the speed of enemies, and the amount of weapons you can hold, a weapon wheel sorts out switching weapons, and briefly slows down time when you’re doing so. We got glimpses of a Shotgun, the two weapons I mentioned earlier, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Cannon, Chaingun and Heavy Assault Rifle. Interestingly enough, the Shotgun and Assault Rifle seemed to have secondary fire modes as well.
The second piece of Single Player content focused on the Hell map, home of the demons. It showed off another few recognisable enemies from the franchises past, and showed more different executions moves, fast paced combat and general gore and explosions. It looks fantastic, and the id Tech 6 engine shows off a lot of the glory.
In terms of Multiplayer, we saw a brief gameplay glimpse, but we got a lot more information than that. With Doom Snapmap, you will have the ability, not only to make multiplayer maps, but full game modes with so much customisation that it looks like Project Spark and Doom had a baby. You can set up Horde based game modes of waves, have a currency system to buy weapons, upgrades or health, or even just make a 4-player deathmatch for you and your buddies. Much like Halo’s Forge mode, you can instantly hop in and check it out. Map making is also simplified with a grid based section system, so sculpting isn’t necessary and there’s even options to add clutter to each section to make it more interesting. It looks simple to use at the same time as being very in-depth, and id Software have mentioned that all platforms are getting this support.
That’s about it for the Doom reveal, but keep checking back for more updates as Monday is when E3 really gets into full swing.
