For those of you, like myself, who were late to the Diablo party and picked it up on consoles last year will find this tidbit of information a little curious. It was recently announced that the PS4 version of the game, originally announced alongside the PS4 (and very quitely, the 360) at Sony’s PS4 Announcement, saying that it will be titled the Ultimate Evil Edition, containing the soon to be released expansion pack Reaper of Souls. It turns out that Blizzard is also developing this version for the Xbox One, but they can’t yet confirm that it’ll ever be released on Microsoft’s Console.
It was confirmed by the Lead Producer of Diablo 3, Alex Mayberry, who explained that the console development team is working on both versions simultaneously, much like the previous generations iteration of the game, but it’s a contract with Microsoft that seems to make the release up in the air. This way of development makes much more sense to the team at Blizzard, and according to Mayberry, the console teams aren’t far behind the PC team, meaning that a release of either version may not be that far off in the future.
It’s a strange situation, as the Xbox 360 version wasn’t really marketed until the release was coming up. Now, keeping quiet on the Xbox One version seems to be following a similar vein, so it’s curious to see if it’s Microsoft themselves questioning whether to release it or not, or if it’s Sony making them keep silent about the development so they can gain more points in the public eye. Time will tell, as tomorrow see’s the first expansion pack, Reaper of Souls, being released on the PC. Again, no date on the previous generation console versions getting this expansion, though it was confirmed that it will happen. It would be a damn shame to see Blizzard putting all this effort into a version of the game if it doesn’t see the light of day, but the fact that it is being worked on, and sounds very far ahead, makes it sound like it’s more of when rather than if.
