Netflix’s version of Daredevil is, it’s fair to say, the most popular live-action version of the hero done yet. There are Tumblr posts, reddit threads and video essays galore on this guy. Why? Well, if you ask me, it’s because he is. Sorry Ben Affleck, but you’re a much better Batman than Daredevil. Yes, I’m aware that the director’s cut of the 2004 film isn’t that bad, but Netflix’s version really does knock it out of the park.
As referenced in the introduction, the Netflix version of Daredevil is just better. There are 3 series of his misadventures to enjoy, as well as an appearance on the less well received The Defenders. However, so many people collectively have lost their shit now that Daredevil has been cancelled by Netflix. I don’t mean that people have “cancelled” it by Twitter (whatever that means), it means that Netflix won’t be continuing the series for a potential season 4.
However, it’s not all bad news, as we are now aware of. Sony are making a third Spider-Man film, in conjunction with Marvel, which allows everything to be tied up neatly. We really should have seen this sort of thing coming with both the multiverse tease in Spider-Man: Far From Home and as well as their Golden Globe winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
These teases and the fact that Spider-Men from alternate universes basically allows Marvel, Paramount, Sony and Columbia Pictures to allow their take on characters to appear in movies made by the others, which brings us neatly onto the Daredevil conundrum: Daredevil is owned by Marvel, but in the context of the comics, has more to do with Peter Parker’s Spider-Man than anyone else. Any big screen adaptation would thus likely have to involve him.
This is probably why, as of the time of writing, it’s rumoured heavily that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock will be appearing in the as-yet-untitled third Spider-Man film. Both respected insider Charles Murphy and Daniel Richtman (of the Hollywood Insider) have confirmed the news.
However, I don’t want to disappoint you, but there’s something you need to know. Whilst Charles Murphy, Emergency Awesome and Hollywood Insider have great track records in terms of accuracy, take this with a pinch of salt. Neither Sony nor Marvel have confirmed it yet, and we’re 12 months away from the expected release date. What’s more is that Cox is keeping tight-lipped on the subject. This might be due to the way the MCU gets actors to operate, but it might not.
There will be more on this as it develops. The as-yet-untitled film is scheduled for release on December the 17th, 2021.
