For years, Acclaim Entertainment had its ups and downs. With every huge release like NBA Jam and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, it had licensed duds like…well, the South Park games. The company eventually bit the dust in 2004 following the disastrous BMX XXX. But now, it appears that Acclaim is back for more.

The company has an all-star list of an advisory board, including CEO Alex Josef and superstar wrestler Jeff Jarrett. (No, we’re not kidding!) They’re thrilled to have involvement with the resurrected company, which promises to bring back old-school favorites and indie titles. And that includes the option to “reignite classic franchises.”

So, with indie developers at hand, the real question is…what franchises should return? Obviously licensed ones are out (sorry, no Stargate, kids). However, there are original franchises that can make a return.

With that, let’s run down five games that could make a return under the guise of indie development. We’d love to see fresh games work their magic on these older favorites and give them to a new generation to enjoy. And, honestly, we really just want Extreme-G back. It’s been too long.

All Star Baseball

Of course, this really depends how much the MLB is willing to work with Acclaim on a fair licensing deal. But…why the heck not? All Star Baseball dominated the bases for years on the Nintendo 64 and other platforms. And considering that Sony’s got the only major baseball game on the market, there’s room for a new competitor to take a swing.

The Red Star

One of the last games to come from Acclaim following its closure, The Red Star is a genuine action classic. Based on the comic book of the same name, it saw a cult following. So, yes, a remaster would definitely hit the spot, especially with extra stages and four-player support. Or, hey, maybe a reimagining with a roguelike approach. We’d definitely take a shot with that.

Extreme-G

Though Wipeout clearly stole its thunder back in “the day,” the Extreme-G games did generate a large audience. But we haven’t seen the franchises in decades, even though its universe still has a lot to offer. Getting the right indie team to recreate the fast-paced racing of this favorite would be a huge win. And maybe throw in some online options so we can annihilate friends.

Vexx

Vexx was one of those games lost in the glut of 3D platforming adventures on the PS2. But it actually wasn’t bad at all, and provided some intuitive gameplay ideas. Seeing a new squad tackle this character and add their special touches to him would definitely be a huge plus. We’ll even take a re-release of the original game. C’mon, Vexx us already.

Fur Fighters

Although multiplayer games are built on a much greater level now, we think there’s room for this fur-flying shooter. Fur Fighters and its sequel, Viggo’s Revenge, didn’t do too bad on the market. However, Acclaim’s closure stopped it from flourishing. Now would be a good time to reintroduce the game, and maybe with even more of a mature-rated touch.

BONUS: Aggressive Inline

Obviously we don’t want BMX XXX back, because that’s what sunk Acclaim to begin with. However, what about Aggressive Inline? This still stands as one of the best, if not the best, tony Hawk-style games for its time. So a re-release – or maybe even a retinkering with modern online competition – would definitely be worth the grind.
