Tokyo 42 which calls itself a love child of isometric shooters of the past such as Syndicate (The original, not the somewhat questionable “remake) releases Today on both Steam and Xbox One. You play as an Assassin as you make your way through the beautiful but minimalist styled environments as you attempt to take out your target while taking care to stay hidden by attempting by blending into the crowd.
The game which despite it’s stealth elements is at its fundamentals an action game and a colourful one at that, bright oranges and blues along with a multitude of other wonderful colour combinations the game is at the very least very nice to look at. However don’t let its colour filled aesthetic fool you this game appears to be quite hardcore in terms of gameplay, the game itself is extremely physics focused with every single shot fired being affected by the games’ physics engine which allows for one of the main game mechanics to come into play: Dodging. Players are able to dodge every single bullet fired which creates for some rather fast based situations as players are able to weave their way through Enemy fire while taking them out. Personally Tokyo 42 reminds me a little of Hotline Miami at least in terms of its fast paced gameplay, this is of course something I welcome since its looking unlikely we’ll see a 3rd Hotline Miami Game anytime soon, so hopefully Tokyo 42 provides the “Fast-paced, murder frenzy” fix that me and other gamers are missing.
While researching the game I stumbled across the Engine that it was being developed on: “Unity” admittedly as a PC player alarm bells immediately went off due to some past indie horror stories where the developers copied and pasted stuff off the asset store (I’m looking at you Air Control). Thankfully SMAC Games appears to have taken the correct path and as far as I can tell appears to have created all of the assets in house and from everything we’ve seen so far it appears they have put some real effort into their minimalist art style.
