We are well into a new week which does mean another piece of info from the Halo lore, hopefully in an easy to digest way. The topic of today’s article will be something most Halo fans will take for granted, but is an icon within the games.
The Mongoose is an iconic Halo vehicle and is easily a fan favourite, especially since the introduction of the Gungoose in Halo 2 Anniversary. Fun fact though, is that the Gungoose was originally meant to be in Halo 2, but was cut due to it not fitting in with developer Bungie’s vision for the game. Not to mention the ODST Mongoose that never made it in Halo 3: ODST.
As far as Mongoose variants go, there are 2 main variants, with 2 sub variants. The M274, and the M290. I’ll break down the differences and similarities.
As for where they were manufactured, all variants were created by AMG Transport Dynamics. The main difference between these two versions is that the M290 All-Terrain Vehicle (The Halo 5 variant) was used post human-covenant war.
The M290 Mongoose has a length of 11.5 feet, a width of 6.6 feet, and a height/depth of 5.7 feet, which is slightly larger than the previous M274 model, which had a length of 10 feet, a width of 5.9 feet, and a height/depth of 4.9 feet.
When looking at the vehicles in greater detail, it becomes clear that the combat version of the vehicle is different.
- The M274 Mongoose (Pre Halo 5) having a version of which had M67 Light Anti-Infantry Weaponry fitted to the side, having a similar effect to having two SMG’s strapped to the side.
- The M290 Mongoose model however had a combat variant that featured twin grenade launchers instead, allowing more combat against small vehicles as well as infantry.
Although the designs changed plenty from Halo 3 to Halo Reach, it was still all the same type of vehicle at its core (according to my research). When looking back over the vehicles design it is pretty interesting to see how it can evolve so much for such a basic vehicle.
Anyways, as far as in depth details go, there isn’t much to talk about. It was made as a transport vehicle; although it also has combat roles when needed, and would usually carry a marine on the back that would have a Rocket Launcher (This did go on to inspire some fun multiplayer game types online).
