I love Fable. I remember years ago my mum bringing a game home she’d bought out of a bargain bin and it was Fable: The Lost Chapters. I fell in love with Fable then. It took me on a high fantasy adventure and pitted me to rise as a hero/ or villain of Albion. From then on I bought each addition to the franchise. With Fable 2 I played the game an obscene amount on the Xbox 360. I owned every house, customized my hero to be a magnanimous ruler and protector of the people. I’d hunted down every demon door and special weapon I could find, including all the DLC content that came along. With Fable 3, my best friend and I got a copy each, sat in the same room and played a good half of the game in one sitting. I was glued to the idea of reclaiming my Kingdom, and with some of my favourite celebrity voice actors guiding me, Bernard Hill and John Cleese, the reviews could not damage my enjoyment of the franchise.

And then Lionhead was no more. I was deeply saddened by the news. Not just for the potential of one day working there as a designer, but at the fear we may never see a Fable game again.

Like a phoenix, Flaming Fowl Studios, rose from the ashes of Lionhead. In the video below, Flaming Fowl Studios is a team of developers from Lionhead that have been given the right of Fable by Microsoft which is a fantastic gesture on their part. In the video below the developers share some gameplay and development of Fable Fortune, a collectible card game with a morality system.

Not the usual Adventure RPG but still maintains the charm of Fable

So it’s not an action adventure RPG but to me this feels like Flaming Fowl Studios are trying to get on their feet. Using the known world of Albion and its inhabitants to create a collectible card game (CCG) for Xbox One and PC. The CCG boasts a lot of features, with co-op play, questing and PVP available. If the studio pull it off I think we will have a CCG that can stand out on the Xbox one. With success we could see the studio develop another Fable or perhaps expand into some other new genres. Fable Fortune is currently available to back on Kickstarter where you can currently pay £100 to test the alpha game. For me, that’s a little too steep but I will be backing the game for a Beta pass and I’m excited to see further updates.
