The Prometheans are a recent threat to Humanity within the lore of Halo. First appearing in Halo 4, this ancient threat is more menacing than the Covenant, with a particular vendetta against them it seems. But who are they? What was their purpose? If you’re new to Halo for Halo 5, or just need a bit of a reminder, this article should help you get up to speed on the newest threat in the Halo Universe.
The highest and most respected group of the Warrior-Servants in the Forerunner’s Galactic Empire, the Prometheans were led by the Ur-Didact during the Human-Forerunner and Forerunner-Flood wars. Their main base of operations was the Shield World known as Requiem.
Physically, the Prometheans were tall, thin, had flat noses, with six fingers, but were extremely human-like. They were also heavily muscled, with the ability to crush a human skull with ease. Despite this, their mental capabilities were also very sophisticated. They could easily share information and sensory input with the warriors under command, as well as command a million remote controlled craft at once. The Prometheans were also responsible for creating the Warrior Keeps, known as Cryptums, where a being could live in suspended animation for thousands of years. One of these, found on Requiem, contained the Didact.

The Promethean’s encountered by Humanity were mechanical in nature, however. This was due to the Didact making the decision to use the composer on his forces during the Forerunner-Flood war. The Promethean forces willingly accepted this, being converted into digital intelligences. These forces contained many different classes, including the leader Knights, support drones known as Watchers and pack-oriented Crawlers. Each have a distinct role in combat, and are deadly when all included in a force together.
More recently, Promethean Armigers known as Soldiers have appeared. Unlike the previous units mentioned, these Soldiers are not composed beings, but rather advanced AI constructs. Bipedal combat platforms, skilled in raiding spacecraft and close quarters combat. After the exile of the Didact, the Armigers were used by the Forerunners Empire to combat the flood and guard various Forerunner sites after the firing of the Halo Array.

After a long slumber, the Prometheans were re-awoken on Requiem, and were commanded once again by the Didact, this time to prevent Humanity from claiming the Mantle of Responsibility to the Galaxy, and claiming the title of Reclaimer. They are a deadly force, and we probably haven’t seen their full potential as a threat yet. After the defeat of the Didact, they continue to pop-up on other planets, combating anything and everything in their way.
