Coming less than a year after the release of Far Cry 4, Ubisoft has announced the latest entry in it’s award winning open world FPS franchise. This time it appears the series will be taking a break from the franchise’s trademark formula of deactivating towers and evading various factions and is instead stepping quite literally backwards in time to the stone age, a time where humanity were not the top of the food change and were instead trying to climb it while also trying to survive the harsh conditions of the times.

Players will take the role of the seasoned hunter  TAKKAR (Voiced by Elias Toufexis of the Deus Ex and Assassins Creed franchise) who is the last living member of his hunting group. Arriving in the dangoures but beatiful land of Ores, Gamers will have one clear goal: to survive the world where Humans are not the hunter but instead the hunted. Throughout the game The player will come across an entire cast of characters who will work with the TAKKAR to fight for survival and tame this unforgiving pre historic world. The game seems set to truly tap into the survival aspects of the series as the player must hunt for food, learn to master the use of fire and fight those higher on the food chain for the sole purpose of survival. The player will also come across other tribes which will undoubtedly lead to various conflicts both in gameplay and story.

Its safe to assume that the studio will be likely overhauling the already expasive hunting and crafting systems of past games, given the game’s premise of humanity struggling to climb the food chain. When asked about the game’s unique setting Ubisoft’s Creative Director Jean-Christophe Guyot responded with  “Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless and savage frontier.  The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain.  That came with conflict against other humans, of course, but also against nature itself.” from this it is safe to expect that this game will be in many ways similar to the previous entries in the long running critically acclaimed series while adding some new variations while also expanding and changing previous mechanics that have been a part of the franchise in the past, whether or not this will please old fans of the franchise while bringing in new fans is yet to be seen.

The game is set to release in Quarter 1 of next year, with it coming to the Xbox One and Playstation 4 in February with a PC version following a month after. With Ubisoft’s recent big releases such as Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed Unity having numerous launch issues I cannot help feel somewhat concerned about this game especially since this seems like such unusual decision for a company like Ubisoft to take however on the other hand it is a welcome one as it is quite exciting to see a AAA studio taking risks with one its core IPs like Far Cry and actively taking a break from the regular formula, this game will certainly be one to watch.
