Destiny has been met with a massive divide in opinion; even hard-core fans can see the flaws throughout the game. It is heart-breaking that a game seems to be surrounded with this talking point, but the question is “Was Destiny deliberately broken to begin with?”
Rumours all over the internet give legs to stories about two thirds of Destiny’s story was removed to be intentionally sold as DLC later on down the line. When you purchased the game there was a leaflet giving you information on 2 planned DLC that will be available through the season pass. So straight off the bat your £50 game is now telling you to hand over another £35 for content that they knew ahead of time was going to be released. People bought the season pass and only to be told that now your season pass will not cover the 3rd piece of DLC which is known as The Taken King.
At this point you may think I am a hater of Destiny, I am not. I really enjoy the game and thought the worlds had extremely well thought out world and level design. It just seems that the story becomes extremely jumpy and disjointed at some parts in the game where things may have been taken out and the remaining story has not been reviewed and altered to accommodate the changes.
I spent a lot of time playing the game and eventually got bogged down in the grind-fest of the later stages of the game. I never did pay the money for the DLC as I started to wonder how much I still wanted to play Destiny.
At E3 this year Bungie and Activision announced The Taken King and brought the talking point back to Destiny, the addition to the game would comes as a premium downloadable update (more paid DLC) or you can purchase Destiny – The Taken King edition. This edition I would say is your best value for money, it is retailing at £46.99 on some UK retailers and includes the original game along with all the DLC to date. This includes the entire season pass DLC (The Dark Below and House of Wolves) and The Taken King content all in one edition of the game. This is something I will be looking to pick up and try as this seems to be the edition of Destiny that maybe should have existed in the first place.
The Taken King does seem to add a lot more story that was maybe lacking originally and does look to continue to be fun to play with friends. I love what Bungie have created, I just maybe do not agree with how Destiny has played out to date. I am sorry of this article has come across as something of a negative piece I really do not want it to. I just want to point out flaws in a game that was highly anticipated and seemed somewhat lacklustre on its release.
Major updates have been delivered to some of the games levelling mechanics and have turned the later game stages into less of a grind-fest and more of a classic RPG experience. Maybe now with a more story driven focus on Destiny it will return to a game where people will want to talk about more than just how much they spent to get the full experience.
Below is the newest trailer for the game featuring a classic track from Led Zepplin –
