Kingdom Hearts is back. Yes, again. Years after Kingdom Hearts III took forever to release and added some cool stuff to keep Square Enix and Disney fans slap-happy for some time, Square Enix has announced that a fourth chapter is in the works. And it’s more realistic than ever before.
In a nutshell, Sora and his friends are now visiting what’s known as the Lost Master Arc. Sora actually awakens to find himself in the Quadratum, which looks like a hyper-realistic version of Tokyo. Before he gets a chance to talk to a new character, Strelitzia, he discovers a mighty large Heartless rampaging through the city, Godzilla-style. He takes his Keyblade in hand (well, it appears out of nowhere anyway) and he begins the attack.
Kingdom Hearts 4 adapts to an all new combat style, using items from the environment and powered-up moves that could take down even the largest Heartless fist. Granted, we’ve only seen a glimpse of it in action in the trailer below, as it’s still a work in progress. But it’s very promising.
What’s interesting, however, is the tease at the end, when Donald and Goofy are searching through the Darkness and hear a voice calling out to them. It could literally be anyone, but there’s a rumor going around that this particular chapter of the series will introduce some kind of Star Wars arc. Remember, they’re a Disney property now, so the sky’s the limit in terms of what can be introduced.
It’ll be awhile before we find out, however. The game has only just begun development and isn’t likely to come out for at least a couple of years. When it does, it’ll likely be for next-gen platforms like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, but we’ll see.
For now, enjoy the trailer below, which also provides a glimpse at the forthcoming Kingdom Hearts Missing Link mobile game that’s arriving sometime this year. It should provide a glimpse at how Kingdom Hearts 4will connect with the rest of the series, so we’ll see how that pans out.
