The Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (or MOBA) Genre is still fairly new. Originating from StarCraft and WarCraft 3 mods, most notably Defense of the Ancients, it has spawned many different games, the most popular currently being League of Legends and DOTA 2. These games focus on usually 5 on 5 Player vs. Player fighting, while protecting your own base. There are lanes that minions travel down that give your character experience and gold to buy items and upgrade your abilities and matches can last from about 20 minutes to over an hour.
Smite, however, is something a little bit different. Rather than focusing on movement more akin to an RTS, it uses a Third Person Camera and acts like a classic Third Person Action game. This free-to-play game has become popular on PC as it’s something a little different in the MOBA scene, and has a great little premise behind it as well. All characters you play are Gods from different mythologies and religions, with Thor, Anubis and Cupid being some of the characters you can play while in lane.
Smite has just been announced for the Xbox One, and because of it’s unique style play, could be great fun on the Xbox One. It isn’t the first MOBA to appear, with Monday Night Combat and Guardians of Middle Earth attempting this before, but with a lot of development behind them already, and an established fan-base, Smite may have more chance of succeeding when these previously failed. Being free-to-play could also be a great factor in getting players to try it out.
