Ubisoft had a large presence at this year’s EGX with Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey being possibly their biggest title. The second Assassin’s Creed game in 2 years had a lot of people worried that they had returned to their annual release schedule, though Odyssey has been in development for a few years.
The build I was playing on the show floor was the Gamescom demo, and unfortunately this was the case for many of the games at EGX this year, so if anyone had attended Gamescom then you were not learning anything new.
The gameplay for Odyssey is fantastic, the control scheme from Origins is still in place with a much more action/RPG style to the game with customisation of armour and the different fighting layout. Players got to choose which gender they wished their character to be in the demo, I varied and chose the female lead. There were 2 clear mission choices for players in the demo build, a sailing themed mission to break a blockade, the other a large-scale battle. I tried both but found the sailing mission a lot more enjoyable, probably because completing the sailing mission reinforces your troops for the battle mission.
The game looks beautiful, with the character design and attention to detail at a whole new high for the series. The draw distance was incredible on the One X with great usage of atmospheric distance used, it gave the game an incredible depth and scale.
My thoughts were that this new combat style and RPG changes to the core gameplay are here to stay, in my opinion they are very much welcome. This is a shame that they are now working backwards in the timeline instead of pushing on forward, though more Assassin’s Creed is certainly not a bad thing for the fans.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is out October 5th 2018 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
