The original PlayStation console redefined gaming as we knew it at the time, mainly due to its innovative software releases. We got games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tekken 3, Final Fantasy VII and more. And they tremendously shook up the landscape as we knew it. But the “smaller” titles are also noteworthy, like the 1998 release R-Type Delta.
Irem’s first 3D entry in the difficult-yet-enjoyable shooter series flew to new heights at the time. And how. Along with slick 2D gameplay, it packed incredible visuals and sound. But for those that missed it the first time around, relax. Clear River Games has you covered with today’s new release, R-Type Delta HD Boosted.
Everything you loved about the original game is back, but with a fresh coat of paint and abundant extras. This includes a practice mode that helps you learn about obstacles in stages as well as how to overcome them. And there are different difficulty settings, three ships to choose from, and plenty of extras. Online leaderboards aren’t included (yet), but I trust they could come with a future update.
The game is still hard as heck (even on Kids), but make no mistake. HD Boosted is a legendary take on the original game, and something all shooting fans need for their collection. It looks awesome, sounds like a winner and plays like a dream. Even in the nightmare scenario. Now get out there and save the galaxy!
R-Type Delta HD Boosted Has Plenty of Firepower
Pretty much a 1:1 remaster of the original game, R-Type Delta HD Boosted delivers. You choose from one of three ships, including the original R-9 and two similarly powered prototypes, and then take to the skies. It’s here that you’ll face off against the dreaded Bydo Empire, a dreaded mix of alien and machines ready to destroy.
Luckily, you’re set to go. Along with your traditional firepower and boost shots, you also have the Force Ball. You can use this in two different ways. You can either let it fly loose as an extra firing tool; or attach it to your ship to utilize power-ups and deflect certain shots. What’s more, you can attach it in front or behind, allowing things like spread lasers to fire in either direction. It’s useful, especially when enemies come creeping up on you.
There’s also a cool DOSE weapon that you can charge up by defeating enemies. This will clear the screen with a lovely explosion, but make sure you use it at the right time. Like with the bosses, which provide an immense challenge.
The gameplay is wonderful, and City Connection has Irem’s formula dialed in to a T. That said, the game does have difficulty curves, even on the “Kids” difficulty setting. We were in stage two and found ourselves pummeled underwater by a huge falling cylinder, trying to avoid it while enemies fired at us. We finally figured it out, but, hoo boy.
That said, there is a neat training-style mode that gets you prepared for obstacles like this. It uses any stages you unlocked and lets you fly through them, so you can practice where things are and figure out your best method of survival. It’s a wonderful tool, though I wish all the stages were unlocked up front. Not a big deal at all, tho.
The game does have limited credits, but you can earn more as you play on. There are also unlockable goodies, as well as options to tweak for visual performance. Sadly, there’s no sign of the online leaderboards, but hopefully an update will bring them around. That would open up Delta’s world dramatically.
In the meantime, R-Type Delta HD Boosted has more than enough going for it gameplay-wise. Its strategies are deep and thrilling, and though its challenge is high, it’s worth it for fans and “shmup” embracers alike.
Want a Good Presentation? R-Type Delta HD Boosted Has It!
City Connection really went all out with HD Boosted’s presentation, and it shows.
While the general nature of the original PlayStation release is intact texture-wise, it looks brighter and faster than before. Fans will easily recognize the PlayStation essence, but enjoy the touches that make it appear more modern. The ship selection screen is also pretty awesome, though you do have to sit through the intro sequence each time. Ah well.
As for the sound, it’s impressive. The music sounds like a mixture of some of Irem’s best work. On top of that, the sound reengineering with the FX are really something. Take your ship underwater for the first time and you’ll see – er, sorry, hear – what we mean.
Overall, R-Type Delta HD Boosted is a remaster done right. Kudos to City Connection on what I believe is their best work to date.
R-Type Delta HD Boosted Is Calling, Be Sure To Answer
I know there are some amazing shooter games on the market already. But trust me, save room for R-Type Delta HD Boosted. Even with its difficulty settings and small limitations, it’s a delectable experience that will keep you coming back. Each ship offers something special here, and the gameplay and presentation more than live up to the hype.
Now all we need is to give R-Type III: The Third Lightning some modern day love and this series will truly take to new heights. For now, though, do not miss Delta.
