Capcom may not be a perfect company. However, their respectful treatment of their cornucopia of classics is absolutely flawless. And there’s no further proof of that than Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
The long-awaited compilation features six thrilling fighting games, along with a beat-em-up based on The Punisher. The end result is a compilation going into overdrive, with something for everyone.
The options are unparalleled, with a lot to tweak and play with. The history aspect is also well done, even without video interviews. And the joy of playing something like Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes online (with rollback code!) is insane.
Now, the price is a bit higher than other collections. However, it’s justifiable, given the amount of content here. This includes rare favorites getting a second chance at life. And the abundant features? Let’s just say it. This one’s going to take you for a ride.
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics Is So Pringles
The collection features seven games in all, including the following:
- X-Men: Children of the Atom
- Marvel Superheroes
- X-Men vs. Street Fighter
- Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter (with bonus character Norimaro!)
- Marvel vs. Capcom
- Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
- The Punisher
I assure you, that is a lot. Some of these games haven’t been seen in years, since the glory days of the Saturn and Dreamcast. But they’re back here, and literally arcade perfect.
All the games feature razor sharp presentation. This includes a number of screen filters and wallpapers to adjust, as well as other little things. You can also turn on the classic game soundtrack where needed, as well as other things. And, as expected, you can adjust difficulty settings, power and much more. (Oh, and don’t worry about unlocking Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s massive cast – they’re already here!)
The visuals are a real treat, even if some games have aged better than others. But it’s the speed that impresses, particularly on more complex games like MVC2. And the fact it works with no problem online is a treat. Whether you prefer Casual or Ranked matches, there’s something here for you.
As for audio, it’s excellent. Hearing Children of the Atom’s rad music is always fun. And, of course, “gonna take you for a ride” is set to repeat in your skull. As it should. The fighter effects and voiceovers are terrific, too, especially good ol’ Wolvie. “YOUR JOB!”
Honestly, this is a well-rounded round-up when it comes to presentation. You’ll be wowed by some of the classics on display here. And if one game doesn’t suit you (like Marvel Superheroes), others most certainly will. This thing even runs like a beast on the Steam Deck. Now that’s something worth celebrating with a few KO’s.
Controls and Content To Go Wild Over
Along with the presentation, each game in Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics feels right.
Granted, some controllers (like a FightStick) are better than others. But the responsiveness is off the charts on various platforms. It performs beautifully, and allows you to execute specials and supers with ease. You can also map controls however you see fit, and activate “easy” functions as well. (Oh, and difficulty, of course.)
Along with the seven games and the various options with each one, there’s so much more. Online playing works incredibly with the rollback netcode, though the lack of crossplay does hurt a little. Local matches rock, too, with options galore. And the bonuses – jukebox, artwork and more – will keep you flipping through for a while.
Again, the $50 price tag may make some of you balk. That said, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics pays you back in spades. You’d be a fool to miss out on this beat-em-up party.
So Good, Even the Knicks Would Like It
Capcom has wowed with arcade compilations in the past, like the wild Capcom Fighting Collection. But, boy, it will take a lot to top Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
The fact that X-Men vs. Street Fighter and The Punisher have re-releases is a miracle in itself. Not to mention Marvel vs. Capcom 2. But the ridiculous amount of options will keep you busy. Not to mention online play (even with the lack of Crossplay) being as stimulating as it is.
This could easily be one of the best retro collections ever. And keep in mind we’re getting Capcom Fighting Collection 2 next year. That means Power Stone and Project Justice, baby. Capcom isn’t done brawling just yet.
(Though Cannon Spike deserves another shot, I think. What say you, Capcom?)
