“Why do I need gaming glasses?” Some of you are likely saying this right now, figuring that your eyes are “just fine” when it comes to looking at a monitor or TV and enjoying some of your favourites.
But I know many of you enjoy playing for prolonged periods, and that can wear down your eyes. Notice how some of you build up tears or occasionally have to rub them? That’s the wear.
Fortunately, Gunnar Optiks makes an affordable – and viable – solution with their wide line of eyewear, custom made with gamers in mind. The company recently sent us out a pair of its high-end Mateo glasses, modelled after the Black Panther movie and labelled as the “Vibranium Edition.” I’m not exactly sure that they’re made of Vibranium, but, I’ll tell you what, they make a world of difference when it comes to a clearer vision for your games.
Time To Get a Clearer View
The general build of these glasses, as you can see in the photos, is a classic round shape. This allows most head sizes to comfortably fit these over your eyes. The yellow tint does provide a nice, clear view of your monitor or TV of choice, but doesn’t take away any detail. They also feature an anti-reflective lens coating, so you don’t have to worry about easy distraction from outside stuff (careful, your spouse might sneak up on you). The nose bridge is comfortable as well, not gripping the nose too tightly. The end result is less strain for your eyes, while getting the most out of your gaming performance.
Mateo’s build is made of premium titanium frame material, so it’s not Vibranium. Still, it’s an incredibly solid build, and, aside from sitting on the glasses or running them over, they’re built tough. I do suggest keeping them in the case when they’re not in use, though. Fortunately, the set comes with a deluxe case and cleaning cloth/bag so you can keep them secure. It’s a neat magnetic case, too, so it seals shut.
These glasses also feature high-quality spring hinges, so the parts that go around your ears won’t wear down like we’ve seen with others. They allow them to open and shut with ease, making it a cinch to put them away.
Overall, the build is top quality. Considering this is one of the most expensive Gunnar glasses offered ($129 standard, $279 if you want to go all out with prescription), it’s nice that they live up to that quality. Just remember — they won’t help you see better without a prescription, but they will make things easier to take in.
How Do They Perform With Games?
I tested out the glasses across three instances.
The first was doing work on my iMac. Considering the time I put in at the virtual office, these provide a world of relief with very little distraction from the screen. Again, there is the yellow tint, but you barely notice it.
Second up was playing a game on a portable system – the Steam Deck. I decided to test something with a lot of detail, Red Dead Redemption 2. I’m happy to report that the glasses helped here as well, allowing the screen to be seen nice and clear without missing that much detail.
Then came the big test – my large 4K TV and a session of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. I’m happy to say that, even with a display like this, the glasses work remarkably, and allow you to clarify details without your eyes watering up too much.
Your experience may vary depending on your games and display type, but overall, I was pleased with these specs.
Fit For Royalty
If you can afford the price tag, you get some serious bang for your buck with the Mateo Black Panther Vibranium Edition glasses. They’re built sturdily and with comfort in mind, and the performance across different types of electronics is noteworthy. The large lens build also makes it easy to see larger displays, though, again, it depends on the size of your noggin.
Gaming glasses may not be high on your list, but if you want to give your ol’ eyeballs a bit of a break with prolonged sessions, it’s all about Black Panther forever.
