The Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t exactly known as the console for go-to sim racing experiences. Sure, it’s got Sonic Racing Crossworlds and Mario Kart World to its credit, but I mean stuff like Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo. Outside of Feral Interactive’s awesome GRID Autosport, there’s very little to fit that category on the system. Until now, that is, with GRID Legends: Deluxe Edition.
The game initially released in 2022 and was a hit on other platforms. But now, Feral has used its magic once more to bring it to Nintendo’s great new system. And, honestly, it’s an accomplishment. Outside of a missing multiplayer factor, there’s very little we can find wrong with this magnificent port.
There’s a ton to do, thanks to the inclusion of DLC alongside the already compelling story mode. And though there’s no direct multiplayer, you can compete with online leaderboards, which is the next best thing. And you can select from different visual options, going for 60 FPS in all its glory or something a little more detailed. Up to you. Did we also mention it handles like a dream?
GRID Legends: Deluxe Edition actually feels best on Nintendo Switch 2. Again, it lacks the multiplayer to give it an “absolute” package, but is pretty damn close nevertheless. If you’re looking to scratch that racing itch, no matter your skill level, these Legends should be right at home on your system.
GRID Legends Will Get You Revved Up
EA and Codemasters initially teamed up for this game four years ago, and it holds up with its excellent. The story-oriented racing mode will keep you going, and the extra DLC – including a demolition derby path – adds significant replay value. That’s all here in Deluxe Edition, without the need to buy additional packages. For $40 you get it all, and how.
The game features over 125 cars, 130 tracks across 20+ locations, and a ton of goodies to get through. And that’s not including all the campaign paths you can follow in story mode, or the challenges you can get in Dynamic Events. You’re going to be busy for a while.
There is a lack in online multiplayer – at least, for the moment. You never know, it could be patched in later. But right now, the online leaderboards are well stacked, allowing you to challenge for racing dominance in a variety of categories. You certainly won’t be bored.
As for how the game plays, it’s wonderful. All the car handling is done with precision, and there are options galore for various skill sets. I’ve read somewhere that the GameCube NSO controller is best for precision throttle control, but, honestly, I think the Pro Controller 2 – or whatever you normally use – is just fine. The game also handles without flaw in handheld mode, in case you feel like taking it on the go. (Just be aware you will likely drain your battery, it’s that addictive.)
GRID Legends: Deluxe Edition is a power performer, through and through. It might just become your next racing favorite.
So How’s GRID Legends’ Performance, Hotshot?
For a Nintendo Switch 2 game, one would think that GRID Legends: Deluxe Edition would be a step behind other versions on superior consoles. Nope.
The truth is, GRID Legends is one of the best looking racers on the system. You can choose between quality and performance, and both look hearty. The car models are fascinating, the track design is immaculate, and each race moves smoothly. There’s very little loading time, and the story sequences are fun to watch. The menu is easy to navigate through as well. And did I mention the dynamic camera angles, so you can see all the action that’s happening? This is truly several steps ahead of GRID Autosport.
Audio is superb, too. The game features a number of personalities that know their racing inside and out. But, more importantly, the engine noises are authentic, with weather effects and other little things playing off of it. Plus the dramatic soundtrack kicks in with each race, making you feel its utmost importance. Of course, the game knows how to have fun too, particularly with the demolition events.
Get some good headphones for this one –or crank the volume all the way up on your speakers. You’ll thank me later.
The Stuff of (GRID) Legends
Really, 2026 is off to a great start for Nintendo Switch 2, and GRID Legends: Deluxe Edition is a tremendous part of that. Every bit of this game totally clicks, particularly when it comes to its gameplay and breadth of available events. Plus its presentation is razor sharp, setting a new standard for the console that I hope others meet. And even though the multiplayer is missing, the leaderboards more than make up for it.
You’ll be hard pressed to find a better racing game for Nintendo Switch 2 this year – and, to think, it’s only February. Kudos to Feral Interactive for doing a top-notch job on this one. Now…could they bring DIRT 5 to the platform? That sounds like a challenge they could certainly meet. After all, they have dealt with Legends.
