Considering all the classic Castlevania compilations we’re getting, I’m a bit surprised we’re not seeing more indie devs give the formula a go. Don’t get me wrong, there are strong examples from them. These include the indie Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon games, as well as Retroware’s forthcoming The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest. But given the formula, I’m eager to see more teams cover the Metroidvania aspect. Luckily, the team at Migami Games felt like giving it a shot with Chronicles of the Wolf.

A Castlevania inspired game with bite, the game focuses on Mateo Lombardo (that’s a name). He’s a hero who belongs to the Rose Cross Order, given the task of tracking down the Beast of Gevaudan. (That’s also a name!) It’s here that he works his way through a number of dangerous environments, leveling up with new moves and gathering information from the locals.

The game does have its setbacks, namely with its save points. They’re scattered so far that some deaths are simply unavoidable, forcing you to start again and try something new. It’s also a different breed of adventure, relying more on exploration and toughness in certain spots. If you’re expecting a “good ol” journey through gaming, you might be in for a surprise.

But, these days, people like dark and moody games, right? Chronicles of the Wolf is rich in atmosphere, and absolutely nails its soundtrack. Not to mention that its gameplay, once you get to it, is really cool. It’s a different kind of beast, but one I feel that a lot of people won’t mind owning. Just be ready to dig your teeth in.

Chronicles of the Wolf Has a Challenge For You

As you control Mateo through his adventures in this murky world, you’ll find a lot of danger ahead. In classic Castlevania fashion, you can whip your way through it, though you’ll need better weapons for the journey ahead. Fortunately, you’ll come across them, and pick up some great new abilities. These include the classic double jump, as well as feather boots that let you ride currents like they were waves of water. I really like some of the weapons you find as well.

That said, the journey isn’t for everyone. I say that because it can take a good while to make it. It can take a while getting from location to location and finding info without a clear objective in mind. Not to mention that the save points aren’t as close as I’d like them to be. And considering how easily Mateo can bite the dust in this game, that can lead to a point of frustration.

But with the right level of patience – probably along the lines of Symphony of the Night supplied – you’ll find Chronicles of the Wolf worthwhile. There’s some great variety here, particularly in the awesome boss battles. And once you unlock some of the really cool stuff within the game, movement is handled nicely. It’s just a matter of being patient enough to reach that point.

I know a lot of you are built for challenge, especially after conquering the likes of Elden Ring. For them, I’m sure Chronicles of the Wolf will come as a welcome addition to their library. Others, however, may want to partake in gameplay videos first, to see if it’s their speed.

A Presentation Worth Sinking Your Teeth Into

One thing Migami Games does get right with Chronicles of the Wolf is its presentation. These guys love the Castlevania formula and it absolutely shows in every aspect of its design.

The backdrops and animations are absolutely moody throughout the game. And perfectly so, right down to the classic style 16-bit design. Not only that, but new areas are a pleasure to dive into, if only because they look so right. And I love the look of Mateo and company, as they appear to fit right in with the Belmonts in terms of quality. Very well done.

Not only that, but the soundtrack is awesome. It too channels the retro style, with the right tone of dark, haunting melodies within each area. I’m also a fan of the sound effects, as they too have a lot to offer.

So, yeah, when it comes to presentation, Migami Games knows how to deliver. Chronicles of the Wolf looks and sounds like a winner.

Are You Hungry Like the Wolf?

Really, in the end, Chronicles of the Wolf is here for those that can embrace a challenge. It’s not for everyone, especially with its save point spacing and difficulty. That said, however, it does resemble classic Castlevaniastyle in many ways. Not to mention the presentation is absolutely top-notch for a game such as this.

If you don’t mind digging in to old-school 90s challenge – or just miss having a fresh Castlevania around – this game is most certainly worth it. For others, again, do your research. You don’t want to be bitten in the derriere if you’re not ready for it.
