The original Biped went under a lot of folks’ radars when it came out a few years ago. But the many who caught it enjoyed its neat little puzzle solving gameplay, as well as its otherworldly design. Well, good news, folks – there’s more where that came from, as NEXT Studios and PlayJoy Studios have brought Biped 2 to the surface.
It continues the trend of what made the first game great – solving puzzles with ingenious moves and trying to stay out of trouble. This time, however, it’s got even more multiplayer shenanigans, as up to four people can join in the fun. But don’t worry, you can still play with an independent system if you wish to go on your own.
The new movement styles in Biped 2 are innovative, and the game gives you a lot to do. That said, there are some stages that may test your patience a little bit, especially later in the game. Making the wrong move could result in you having to start all over again – and that’s always maddening.
If you stick with it, however, Biped 2 is a cute little adventure for puzzle fans of all ages. Don’t forget to bring a little patience, though.
Biped 2 Brings the Brain Bogglers
In the game, you portray these cute little robots, Aku and Sila, as they’re called upon to investigate a strange signal across the cosmos. Once they land on the planet, however, they find a wild amount of puzzles to solve in an effort to save the galaxy. But if anyone can do it, it’s these two!
Like the first game, Biped 2 is all about puzzle solving. That means figuring out what you need to move where and moving on to the next one. The first ones are simple enough to figure out. However, as the game goes on, they become increasingly tougher. Some may prefer this level of brain challenge. Others, however, may find themselves easily frustrated. It’s just a matter of developing the right amount of patience to persevere.
The gameplay can’t be faulted, however. It works great with its ingenious “pair mechanics” as it were, and the new types of vehicles are very cool. On top of that, the variety you get to utilize here is innovative enough that it’s never boring. Frustrating? A little bit. But boring? Nah.
On top of that, the game can be played solo with two thumbsticks (always fun!), or you can go co-op. Between two and four player co-op, there’s a lot to do. I prefer two-player myself, as you can simply talk to your friend to resolve things. But four player is a party in itself, and well worth trying at least a few times.
There are also plenty of “wacky hats” to collect. No, they’re not the deepest collectible, but your robots look pretty darn cute in them.
Biped 2 rewards the patient with some excellent puzzle design, but really brings the party when you add friends to the fray. Do yourself a favor and find a good solving crew – you’ll thank me later.
How Does Biped 2’s Presentation Fare?
The key word here is “cute.” The robots are cute throughout Biped 2, though they do serve a purpose with their puzzle-resolving. And they animate quite nicely with their swinging legs – a bit abnormal for their design, but still adorable. And the worlds themselves are dazzling and filled with variety aplenty. But they might be too big at times, as I stated with some of the puzzles being difficult to resolve.
At least the music is a nice mix, with some fresh tunes to keep you moving through each puzzle scenario. The robot noises are also a nice touch. They don’t quite speak, but they refuse to stay quiet either. They’re like little bleeps and bloops that would make R2-D2 proud.
Get On Your Biped and Ride
Look, if you need more action in your games, or puzzle solving isn’t your bag, you could probably skip over Biped 2. But the developers did a great job upping the stakes from the original release, packing on more challenges and better ways for you to play alongside your friends. The game is fun solo as well, though dual-control takes some getting used to.
Biped 2 is a fun game for all ages, and provided you have the right mentality, you’ll have no trouble stepping in with your robot for galactic peace. It’s just one foot in front of the other, really.
