When you think “classic basketball,” I know exactly what you’re thinking. Well, kinda. Either you’re all in with a good simulation like NBA Live 95, or you’re rekindling the old days of NBA Jam. Either way, you’re in for a good time with friends. Well, the developers at Namo Gamo (two people!) fondly remember these days, and try to channel them with Acclaim’s retro baller, Basketball Classics.

Now, you won’t confuse this game with, say, NBA 2K26. It’s built with an old-school style based on the classic NES. But that’s fine, because all you need is good gameplay to back it up. And it has that. Arcade “ballers” will enjoy the simple three-button set-up, or the dynamic dunk animations, reminding me of the Konami classic Double Dribble. But if you want a greater challenge, you can actually call out play formations, improving your style as you try to beat the other team.

There’s a ton to unlock in the Story mode as well, including a variety of “baller” legends and teams. There’s also local multiplayer, which is just as much of a romp as other games of this type. I do wish there was online, but, hey, it’s an indie effort. Besides, living room trash talk needs to thrive.

The graphics are a bit on the “simple” side, but never mind. Basketball Classics shook me to my core with its fun, addictive gameplay and abundance of unlockable content. I hope Namo Gamo works on a football game next. They have the vibe down.

Slammin’ It Home With Basketball Classics

Right off the bat, you know you’re in for old-school goodness with Basketball Classics. The game features a decidedly retro appearance, with players viewable from a wide angle. This allows you to get the depth of the court down pat, and set up decisive plays for the easy (or not-so-easy) score. They’re “simple,” but done right, and I love the stats that pop up on the corners of the screen.

There are some great animations though, especially when it comes to the close-up face-off and the dunking. Oh, man, I was instantly reminded of Konami’s Double Dribble. They execute like a cinematic event, and they’re fun to watch.

As for the sound, it captures the dynamic of the sport. You can hear the retro effects tie in with everything that’s happening on-screen. The music is pretty good too, though obviously Namo Gamo wasn’t going for the licensed NBA 2Kapproach. They decidedly keep it old-school and it works.

So How Well Does Basketball Classics Play?

Well, surprisingly enough, Basketball Classics actually has something for everyone.

The three-button gameplay system – shoot, pass, and defensive moves – works incredibly well for a game of this type. You can pull off some killer moves here, and, again, that leads to dunk city. Which I’m fine with. If you want, however, you can bump up the difficulty and try out the formation types, which is very cool. It’s great to have something here for everyone, and it works very well. I’m also a fan of the dunk system, which you might have guessed.

Basketball Classics does offer some modes. Along with a pick-up-and-play option, you can also jump into Story Mode. Now, NBA 2K26 this isn’t, but it moves along at a good pace and gives you the chance to unlock a bunch if content. That means over 175 (!) teams, each with their own share of classic players. You’ll be busy getting everything within your arsenal. Not bad for a $10 offering.

As for the multiplayer, it rocks. Well, if you have friends. The big problem with Basketball Classics is that it’s missing an online option. That’s understood considering this is a small-time indie project. But, if you do have buddies nearby, they’ll love this game as much as you. And the trash talk will flow, believe you me.

So, yeah, for an affordable indie title, Basketball Classics brings the goods. The only thing missing is Tim Kitzrow rambling off lines left and right, but it still works with a vibe of its own.

Bring It Home!

Basketball Classics may not look like much at first glance. But it’s a highly entertaining sports game, with something for everyone. I love the simple three-button style, and, yes, the dunks are dunkalicious. The presentation is simple but effective, and there’s a lot you can get into, even without online play.

Kudos to Namo Gamo for keeping Basketball Classics tried and true to its calling. Retro b-ball fans will be right at home with it. And, honestly, these guys should give other sports a try. I can totally see football and soccer games getting similar treatment. Hey, maybe baseball? ‘Tis the season.
