The renaissance of the classic “shmup” is upon us. If it’s not indie developers trying their hands at the genre, it’s companies that are bringing back some tried-and-true favorites. And there’s still a plethora of games awaiting rediscovery. That includes the return of the 90s Amiga cult classic, X-Out Resurfaced.
Featuring a number of customizable options and a cool retro underwater theme, X-Out definitely has its perks. Not to mention that it’s an absolute monster on the challenge level, giving you just one life to try and save the day. (Thank goodness for restarts.)
It’s definitely not one for the rookies. However, die-hard “shmup” fans will find a plethora of goodness to dig into. They can try their hand at a number of customization options, and memorize certain level sections to assure better survival. Plus there are cheat codes to discover, which are definitely welcome.
Throw in some other options (Mirror Mode!) and fun gameplay mechanics and you have a game that will fulfill your “shmup” need. X-Out: Resurfaced is short but sweet with its eight levels, but each pose an awesome challenge that will keep you making a return. “Git gud” and you’ll fare just fine.
X-Out: Resurfaced Is All About Item Management
One cool aspect to X-Out: Resurfaced is building a loadout that works for you. There are various cannons and secondary fire options available. However, you have a limited amount of financing each time, so you’ll need to use your resources wisely.
That said, the experimentation factor is very cool. You’ll see some options that work better than others, and try something more effective for your next run. That said, do keep in mind that the game does throw a lot at you. You won’t be nearly invincible, unless you try to use a found cheat code to your advantage. (Die-hards won’t mind going for that high score though. Just like in the arcades!)
The gameplay is a blast. X-Out handles everything with utmost precision, and if you do die (which you will), it’s more than likely your own fault. You can also touch things up based on how you want your controls to feel, though the general approach is best.
On top of that, X-Out also has some great bonus content. You can bring in a friend to join you in local two-player co-op, which gives you a better shot at survival. The game is still brutal, mind you, but at least you have a friend along for the ride. That beats nothing.
I also thoroughly enjoyed finding some cool cheat codes and checking out Mirror Mode. As you might guess, this turns everything around with a new perspective. It’s awesome, to say the least.
Best of all, the package is a mere $20 on most shops. Some of you may wait until the price drops further, especially if you despise hard “shmups.” Everyone else, though, should happily indulge. Especially if you live and breathe for games like this.
A Good Retro-ized Experience
X-Out: Resurfaced pulls off a nice trick with its design. It appears like something out of the older “shmup” genre, but definitely has that modern touch to it.
The level design looks like something you’d find in a classic Genesis game, right down to the multi-scrolling. And while the animations are somewhat basic, they still work, especially the enemy attacks. The bosses are somewhat inspired as well. I think the only real drawback is that some of the level design gets a bit repetitive later on in the game. Not the end of the world, though.
Backing everything up is a rock solid soundtrack – again, coming across from an earlier era. It sounds great and really gets you in the groove as you go through each fight. The sound effects are great, too, even if it’s mostly just bangs and booms. Hey, it’s a “shmup,” what do you want?
It definitely looks like something that you’ll enjoy if you’re a fan of the genre. And even if you’re not, it’s still a looker.
X-Out Marks the Spot
This really comes down to how much you like “shmups” as a whole. Casual fans may find X-Out: Resurfacedhard to accept with its boisterous challenge level and short amount of stages. But dedicated fans will find plenty to enjoy, particularly with customization options and fun extras. And its presentation really comes through as well.
We know you have a lot of options for “shmups” out there. (We’ve pretty much gone through most of them at this point.) But don’t hesitate to add X-Out: Resurfaced to the list. It hits the mark but good.
