Yet another indie Metroidvania. But, like most that have come before it, Somber Echoes provides an interesting twist that will likely hook players. Especially those that seek out a challenge that isn’t so typical in games of this type.

The game puts you in the shoes of a reborn Adrestia, a warrior that’s been called upon to rescue Atromitos. It used to be a dedicated Greco-Roman space vessel, but has fallen to hard times due to devastating enemies. Fortunately, your heroine is able to move around fairly quickly, especially once she has the ability to latch onto orbs to reach higher spaces.

Not everything with Somber Echoes is perfect. The game can be too hard for some, especially with some boss battles where you don’t exactly have the best weaponry. And, yes, getting around can be a bit much, especially closer to the end.

But there’s still something fascinating here, both with the game’s dark, hidden design and its interesting story. Plus some of the new abilities you unlock definitely kick some ass. It’s just a matter of getting there. Some may not see Somber Echoes all the way through, but those that two should definitely reap some rewards from it.

Somber Echoes Isn’t Entirely That Somber, But It’s Something Else

Put together by the team at Rock Pocket Games (with some help from Lav Games), Somber Echoes takes a much darker approach to Metroidvania territory. Not that that’s a bad thing, mind you. In fact, this much more shadowy approach actually works in the game’s favor.

You explore these huge, danky spaces with caution, taking on enemies and even avoiding trouble in certain spots. The stages themselves are really well designed, with room for exploration. That said, it can take a little bit to get into some areas, mainly due to the tough maneuvering called upon. (We’ll get to that in the gameplay section.) But, yeah, the game looks great, and you can see the Greco-Roman touches throughout.

The audio is really something as well. Along with moody, atmospheric music that lends a touch to this nearly empty world, the sound effects are exquisite to your character. And the weapon and boss effects are nicely balanced as well.

So, yeah. Even with its dark approach, Somber Echoes looks like a winner. But…

How Does Somber Echoes Play?

Next, let’s get to the gameplay. And it’s here that Somber Echoes may throw some of you for a loop.

On the one hand, the game leans quite heavily on platforming. Not that it’s terrible, mind you. But some of the later stages require pinpoint movement, and sometimes it can take a few tries, forcing you to restart at an earlier part of the stage. This is frustrating, to be sure. However, the “live and learn” process is well applied here, and dedicated players should see it through.

The combat is pretty good, but not amazing. Your default spear isn’t exactly the greatest weapon out there, especially with boss battles. But you earn upgrades that can help your warrior along, including the ability to reach new heights by latching. And, by the end of the game, you actually pick up some really cool stuff to see it through to the end. It’s just a matter of pushing through.

With that said, the story does make a difference. This is an intricate tale, but one filled with neat little moments that unfold your character’s tale. It’s an approach that I think works better than most, and gets you more involved. Now, again, that might not be everyone’s forte, especially those looking for “quick action.” But I dare not dismiss the effort put in by the dev teams here.

These Echoes Sound Loudly, If Not For Everyone

So, in conclusion, I do recommend Somber Echoes. I can’t quite say it’s going to be a winner for all involved, especially with its demand for precision and timing. And its challenge level may be too much for some.

But those that take it on will find an involving story, gameplay that grows over time, and a presentation that definitely digs into its own vibe. For that alone, it definitely stands out in a crowded field of Metroidvanias. Check out some gameplay videos and decide for yourself. But this is one set of Echoes that will likely stick with you.
