Back in 2019, Playful Studios released New Super Lucky’s Tale, an enhanced version of its 2017 release Super Lucky’s Tale. It was initially an Xbox exclusive, but this allowed it to get a wider release on other platforms. Now, the lovable 3D platformer has made its way to PlayStation 5, with some of its most enhanced visuals to date. But is that enough to give it a recommendation? Sure.
The reason for this is that this platforming adventure is a lovable romp for all ages. What it lacks in overall challenge, it makes up for with utter charm. You’ll guide Lucky through various stages, burrowing for secrets and solving puzzles while taking on the dreaded Kitty Litter. It’s all done in a rather “safe” fashion, but it’s still a good time overall.
On the PlayStation 5, it looks better than ever with a smooth frame rate and solid performance. It also feels just right utilizing the DualSense controller, especially when it comes to digging. And there’s a decent upgrade path, in case you already own the PS4 version.
It’ll take a bit to 100 percent, but once that’s done, there’s not much to come back to. Still, New Super Lucky’s Tale proves to be a worthy journey after all these years. And if you have youngens, it’s an absolute must.
New Super Lucky’s Tale Is All About the Book of Ages
So the big focus here – based on New Super Lucky Tale’s revamped story – is the Book of Ages. A devious Guardian named Jinx is after it, seeking out its power. And backing him up is his brethren, known as the Kitty Litter. Lucky, alongside his sister Lyra, try to keep the Book away from them. But just as they become cornered, it activates, sucking the evil clan inside alongside Lucky.
Over the course of the game, Lucky will venture through levels, aided by helpful little bots along the way. They’ll provide tips here and there, but ultimately it’s up to your natural sense of discovery to get through the game. That’s fine, because it’s a pleasurable 3D romp. Think classic platformers along the lines of Super Mario 64 and you’ll get the idea.
The game does play it “safe” compared to other platformers, with a kid-friendly approach. However, it does have fun with its theme, particularly when those bots make jokes. And there’s still plenty to do as you attempt to complete the game 100 percent, collecting every last coin and bonus page to complete the Book.
In addition, there are some noteworthy boss battles to keep you on your toes (stupid Kitty Litter), along with some neat puzzles. These include knocking around little statues to fit into place just right, and if you make a mistake, you can always try again.
The general platforming is handled very well, and everything is fairly easy to access. That said, again, it’ll take a while to find everything. This journey is packed pretty well.
All that I can complain about with New Super Lucky’s Tale is that there’s barely any sort of new content with the PlayStation 5 version. It looks and sounds nice (I’ll get to that in a sec), but barely anything else included. But even after all these years, I still find this journey to be worthwhile – even if it is somewhat easy. This is a must-own for the kiddos for sure, and you’ll likely have some fun with it, too.
New Super Lucky’s Tale Has Never Looked Better
On the PlayStation 5, New Super Lucky’s Tale has received a great upgrade. The game moves at a beautiful 60 frames per second, with only a slight bit of glitching here and there. The animations look great and the level design works on every level you can expect. I’m also a fan of some of the themed puzzles and layouts, including some cool western stuff.
Likewise, the music keeps up pace too, with lots of pleasant tunes and some interesting gibberish-themed dialogue from the characters. Think Rayman, on the non-sensical but cute side. There’s also good sound effects throughout, but nothing over the top.
The upgrade path isn’t bad, as you’ll only need to plunk down a few bucks if you previously bought the PS4 version. Otherwise, it’ll set you back about $30, which is reasonable for a game of this type. Again, it’s not about reinvention, but rather a cool little platformer that all ages will love.
This Tale Is Worth Looking Into
Even though it’s showing its age in some sections and lacks any genuinely new content, New Super Lucky’s Tale is the best it’s ever been on the PlayStation 5. It looks remarkable for a years-old platformer, and has plenty of gameplay to hold you till the end. All I can hope now is that we’ll see some form of sequel soon, with even more adventures for Lucky to jump into.
But if you’ve got young ones or just want to feel a little young at heart yourself, by all means, turn the page towards this adorable Tale.
GAMERHUB RATING: 3.5 (out of 5) JOYSTICKS
