While we here at Gamerhub UK like to review games for the most part, we like to kick back with a fun movie as well. And boy, there are a lot to choose from. But for our debut movie review, we had to go with the cult classic Killer Klowns From Outer Space, which has recently seen a new 4K release from the folks at Scream Factory.

For those unfamiliar, this cult classic is all about, well, killer clowns. They do indeed come from space, and have come to Earth to bump off humans through a number of devilish ways, including man-eating popcorn (we take that snack for granted), guns that transform people into blood bags, and, I swear, the funniest decapitation you’ll ever see. Just watch.

It’s up to a select few to fight back, but it doesn’t help that there’s human opposition as well – Curtis Mooney (the late John Vernon, fresh from Animal House), who doesn’t believe in clowns. Oh, but he learns. He. Learns.

Let’s take a look under the hood and explain why Killer Klowns From Outer Space is worth adding to your collection.

Should an 80s Movie Get a 4K Treatment? Why Yes

As you might guess, this set comes with the film on a 4K disc, as well as the Blu-Ray release that came out a while back. It also has a nice Steelbook package, with a clown on the front showing off its impressive blood bag collection.

The 4K transfer is absolutely excellent. The film has never looked better than it does here, even if the effects are cheesy by today’s standards. (Hey, cheese is good!)

Plus the audio is very good as well, using DTS sound to perfectly capture every ridiculous guitar riff and evil clown laugh. It sounds great coming through our speakers, and we don’t think you’ll find any room to argue.

The Extras Aren’t, Ahem, Clowning Around

Most of the extras on Killer Klowns From Outer Space are carried over from the previous Blu-Ray release. But no matter, they’re still awesome.

There are a few featurettes that take you behind the scenes of the film, including one dedicated to the score, as well as a few others. You’ve also got deleted scenes, bloopers and plenty of Easter Eggs to explore.

Plus it was great how the filmmakers – the mighty Chiodo brothers – were so closely involved in this movie’s re-release. They recorded a great commentary that’s worth a listen, and have also included some of their earlier movies on here for good measure. They don’t measure up to Killer Klowns, but they’re still an absolute must-see for anyone who’s a fan.

Overall, you’ll have a lot to do with this movie, especially as you wait for the video game, which drops in a few weeks’ time. We can’t wait to dig into that.

Please Send In the Clowns

“An 80s film that deserves the 4K treatment? Are you drunk?” Nah, unless you caught me sipping from a blood bag, I’m not.

Scream Factory has done an absolutely splendid job with Killer Klowns From Outer Space, giving it the best picture imaginable, along with great audio and abundant extras for the Chiodo fanbase, as well as newcomers. Sure, it’s cheesy entertainment, but it’s finely served cheesy entertainment that’ll crack a smile on your face – even as the bodies start dropping.

Just smile and enjoy the show.
