Gunnar Optiks continues to make partnerships that make waves in the game industry. We’ve already seen what they could do with Borderlands, as well as The Witcher. But now they’re teaming up with…Alienware? Yep, the hardware maker apparently decided to join the ranks and get their own glasses – the Roswell models.
For those of you looking for the biggest type of glasses, Gunnar has you covered. These are probably amongst the largest the company has to offer yet, with 58 mm lens size and a nose bridge of 16 mm. Granted, they’re good for faces of all sizes, but they also cover a range around the eyes. That could be good for some.
The build of the glasses, as usual, is top notch, a hard plastic that won’t wear down on the face over time. Not to mention the lenses are fantastic, capable of blocking UV light while providing a nice amber-style tinge so that harmful rays won’t hurt your eyes.
They are a bit costly at around $85, but for fans of Alienware, they’re a must. The design is slick and savvy; the use with different games is a must; and, yeah, they look cool. Plus they won’t slip off of your face easily – always a plus.
Alienware Brings the Geeky With Roswell
The first thing you’ll notice about the Roswell glasses when you open the, um, sleeping bag (it’s a white bag but definitely looks like one) are the sharp colors. The frame are in solid blue with Alienware’s signature alien on the frames, along with Gunnar print out of the eye range. They slip onto the face easily thanks to a supportive nose bridge, and don’t grip too hard on the sides of the head – always a plus.
I will say this, however. The lenses are big. Probably the biggest I’ve seen on a pair of Gunnars since the Borderlandsmodels. But that could be a plus for some, allowing for a good field of vision – even on the biggest TV. They’re also quite effective when it comes to weight, clocking in at 35 grams thanks to its solid plastic base. That means they won’t wear down over time. And they’re easy to carry or even place on your head.
Plus the G-Shield Plus lens make it simple to clean off smudges; and the lenses do a superb job of blocking UV light. That means the glasses are excellent for use with computers and consoles alike.
Just be aware, they come at a price. These glasses are $85, and maybe even more if you go for prescription models. But they’re a great choice, especially for fans of the brand or for people that just want to look geeky. Nothing wrong with that in this day and age.
Let’s Take the Roswell Glasses For a Road Test
How do the glasses hold up when it comes to game sessions? Well, let’s dig into it.
I actually wore the glasses while writing up this piece, and the effect is pretty nice. After all, my monitor is fairly bright, and they do a great job lightening up the picture a little bit. You can still make out details, but not have to sweat the brightness so much.
As for games, they’re pretty idea. We played with a couple of Switch games and found the glasses to hold up well, especially with the portable Switch 2 screen. (That’s bright enough as it is.) They’re also good with smaller monitors, including my PlayStation 3D TV (yes, I own one). I saw no problems getting into games like Gears of War Reloaded and The Crew Motorfest.
Overall, these glasses perform without fail, and fans of “geeky” style glasses will certainly get the most mileage from them.
Get Into Roswell, Baby!
If you don’t mind the steep paying price and the weird carrying case (really, is it a cocoon?), the Alienware Roswell gaming glasses are a good choice. They’re sturdy and well built, and highly effective when it comes to blocking out dangerous rays. And there are option to customize them with prescription, should you feel the need.
