Hello ladies, gentlemen and those of a non-binary nature, my name is Daibhi and this is the Gamerhub community. I am, it’s fair to say, a bit of a Disney geek. I am fortunate enough to have visited both Disneyland in Paris and Disneyworld in Orlando, and have played a fair amount of Disney related games. That includes all the other intellectual properties that Disney owns, including the Marvel and Star Wars games. So, over the last fortnight during my well-earned rest, I gave Disneyland Adventures a go on Xbox One, seeing as it was on Microsoft’s Game Pass and I’m an absolute sucker for Disney games. On with the review…
Disneyland is often referred to as the “Happiest Place on Earth”, and this is with good reason. It’s a place where dreams can and do come true, and the nostalgic magic of childhood comes alive right in front of you. Now, thanks to this game, you can experience that magic from home on the Xbox One. This game offers you a virtual journey through the iconic “Magic Kingdom” of Disneyland Park, bringing all of your favourite characters and attractions to life in stunning detail. As I go through this review, my attempt is to take a closer look at what makes Disneyland Adventures an enchanting experience.
Graphics and Presentation
The moment you step into Disneyland Adventures for the first time, you’ll be blown away by the graphics and sheer attention to detail that this game provides. The game does an exceptional job of recreating the look and feel of Disneyland. From the vibrant colours of Main Street to the towering Cinderella’s Castle just off in the distance, everything looks exactly how it should. The character models are well done, capturing the essence of all your beloved favourite Disney characters with astonishing accuracy. Whether you’re having a “wee blether” (a Scots phrase meaning conversation) with Mickey Mouse, or exploring the iconic Hundred Acre Wood with Winnie The Pooh, you’ll be impressed by the level of details in the animations and character designs.
Gameplay
Disneyland Adventures offers a wide range of activities for players of all ages and abilities. You can embark on quests for various Disney characters, collect autographs and even participate in a wide variety of minigames. The controls are intuitive, making the game accessible to younger players while still providing a level of depth that can be enjoyed by adults. One slight drawback is that some of the quests feel awfully repetitive, as they often involve fetching items from certain areas or completing simple tasks. However, the scope and variety of later activities and the unbridled, child-like joy of exploring the park more than make up for this.
Storylines and Quests
While Disneyland Adventures doesn’t have a traditional storytelling narrative (which would have been an improvement), it excels in capturing the very essence of Disney magic. The quests you undertake involve helping Disney characters solve their problems or help them achieve their dreams. For example, you might assist Cinderella in preparing for the Royal Ball or help Peter Pan defeat Captain Hook. These quests are inoffensive, charming and true to the Disney spirit, but they often feel somewhat disconnected and isolated from each other. A more cohesive storyline and traditional narrative would have made the game better in my less-than-humble opinion.
Audio
One of the standout features of Disneyland Adventures is the audio design. The music, sound effects and voice acting are all spectacular. The soundtrack features classic Disney tunes that won’t leave your head as you explore the park. For example, I couldn’t get “Zippity-Doo-Dah” out of my head for hours after completing the game. The voice acting is amazing, with many of the original or official voice actors reprising their roles. Hearing Mickey Mouse’s iconic voice or interacting with characters who sound exactly like they do in the movies was a highlight for me, and helped add to the authenticity of the experience.
Exploration
Exploring Disneyland in virtual form is a treat for people of all ages. Every corner of the park has been meticulously recreated, and you’ll often find yourself stopping to admire the details and take in the sights of the park. From the bustling streets of New Orleans Square to the serene beauty of the Rivers Of America, the park feels alive and inviting. It’s a joy just to simply wander around and soak in the atmosphere. The sense of wonder and discovery that Disneyland Adventures is truly remarkable.
Replayability
While the main quests in this game won’t take many people any inordinate amount of time, there’s plenty of replayability in this game. The park is filled to the brim with collectibles. These include autographs from various Disney characters, hidden Mickeys and various other items to discover which I won’t spoil for you. If you’re the masochistic or completionist sort of gamer like myself, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again to complete it. Additionally, the game’s co-operative mode allows you to explore the park with a friend or family member, allowing you to gain extra collectibles on your journey to completion.
Summary
In conclusion, Disneyland Adventures on Xbox One is a magical journey that successfully captures the spirit of Disney. The graphics are stunning, the audio is magical, and the sense of exploration rivals what you would get playing Red Dead Redemption 2. While the quest structure and overall plot needs far more cohesion that what this game can offer you, the game’s overall charm makes it a must play for all Disney fans of all ages. Whether you’re a 30 year old goth who loves Disney and wants to relive his childhood or you’re introducing a new generation to the magic of Disney, this game is a heartwarming and entertaining experience. The sort of experience I seldom get in my line of work these days.
